About the Taieri Gorge Railway

The Taieri Gorge Railway is a tourist orientated railway based in Dunedin, New Zealand.
We:-

Own 60 km of the now closed Otago Central Railway through the rugged and spectacular Taieri River Gorge to Middlemarch
Have running rights over 30 kms of Tranz Rail tracks from Port Chalmers through Dunedin to the Taieri Gorge Railway
Operate a daily tourist train, The Taieri Gorge Limited from the Dunedin Railway Station through the Taieri River Gorge to Pukerangi (and to Middlemarch on summer Fridays & Sundays)
Jointly operate the `Track & Trail' train and coach connection between Dunedin and Queenstown
Operate the Seasider train from Dunedin to Palmerston on selected days
Operate public and private Excursion and Charter trains on the Taieri Gorge Railway and throughout the South Island of New Zealand (subject to Tranz Rail operational requirements)
Operate a booking agency from our offices in the historic Dunedin Railway Station specialising in Tranz Scenic trains, Interislander ferries, coach travel and accommodation throughout New Zealand.

The Taieri Gorge Railway Ltd

The Taieri Gorge Railway Ltd is a Local Authority Trading Enterprise jointly owned by the Dunedin City Council and the Otago Excursion Train Trust, who started it all, and whose volunteer members staff our charter and excursion trains and assist with maintenance.

Operating from offices in the historic Dunedin Railway Station our company includes a mixture of permanent, casual and volunteer staff. We aim to provide a unique experience taking visitors from the heart of Dunedin city into the spectacular Otago scenery of the Taieri River Gorge.

We are New Zealand's longest and largest tourist railway and striving to be it's best. Our efforts have been recognised in the winning of the Transport & Tours section of the New Zealand Tourism Awards 1998.
